Why should I choose the Kenwood DMX5023DABS?

Although Double DIN is an ‘industry standard’ size, our own experience has taught us that there is a subtle variation in sizes between brands. This variation, although small, is the thing that can make installing a Double DIN head unit into the popular Puma Double DIN conversion panels (above), the MUD Td5 Console (pictured below) or our MUD Defender Console a frustrating experience and ultimately will affect how good the finished installation looks. Selecting the right unit will save yourself a lot of time, effort and headaches!

Packed with features

Once you’ve installed the Kenwood DMX5023DABS you’ll find it comes packed with all the features that you’d expect from a top-quality head unit including DAB, video and rear camera input as well as Car-Play screen mirroring with Apple and Android devices with full touch screen functionality.

Perfect for the Tdci Defender

The varying fascia dimensions between brands can result in ugly gaps around the edges of the Double DIN opening or worse still require you to start filing away at the opening in your new panel for the unit to sit snugly within it. The external fascia frame dimensions of the Kenwood DMX5023DABS make it a perfect fit for the popular Puma Double DIN upgrade panels.

Here you'll find parts that relate to the product page you're currently viewing. They may be listed in the product description as additional components you will need, or simply a helpful suggestion for other parts along a similar theme.

Shallow fit

The single DIN mechless design (no CD player) of the Kenwood DMX5023DABS means the hi-spec unit comes packaged within a super-slim chassis design. The massive benefit of the shallow 75mm chassis depth is that it overcomes one of the biggest headaches when installing a Double DIN unit, namely the lack of available room at the back of the Defender dashboard.

If you’ve ever removed a standard Single DIN unit from the Defender dashboard you’ll know that space is extremely tight for the wiring behind the head unit. The shallow depth of the Kenwood DMX5023DABS frees up a large chunk of extra space behind the head unit to greatly reduce the risk of trapping any wiring and make fitting/removal a pain-free process.

Also fits Td5 and early Defenders

The Kenwood DMX5023DABS headunit is also a perfect fit in the MUD Td5 Console as well as the MUD Console (pictured below).

Compatible with subwoofers

To the rear of the Kenwood DMX5023DABS  all the input wires are easily labelled to make installation as simple as possible. When installing a subwoofer (including our range of Phoenix Gold Subs) you will require a phono splitter to link the pair of RCA inputs on the sub to the single Sub output jack on the head-unit. The Focal ISUB Active sub is supplied with its own power harness that uses ISO connections so no RCA connection is required.

What about DAB radio?

To get the full benefit of the Kenwood DMX5023DABS  you'll need to upgrade your existing radio antenna to a DAB compatible antenna that has the SMB-Push Fit style DAB Antenna connection used by all JVC/Kenwood head units.

Please Note: The back of the Kenwood head unit is equipped with an ISO car-audio socket that's designed to accept the industry standard ISO car-audio connections. An adapter cable to connect the head unit to the Defender's factory radio loom is not supplied. If your vehicle already has an aftermarket head unit, then you may find that your existing wiring already has the ISO connections and therefore will fit directly into the back of the Kenwood Double DIN head unit. Alternatively you will need to purchase an ISO adapter cable separately.
