200Tdi and 300Tdi Defenders

The Flat Pin ISO adaptor is used when replacing the factory fit radio-cassette head unit found in the 200 and 300 Tdi Models.

Td5 Defenders

The Round Pin ISO adaptor is used when replacing the factory fit CD/Radio head unit found in the Td5 models.

Early Tdci/Puma Defenders

The ‘Puma’ ISO adaptor is used when replacing the factory fit Alpine head unit found in 2.2 Tdci models from 2011/12-onwards. *See notes below.

*Important! Please note that pre-2012 Puma/Tdci models (2.4Tdci) were fitted with the same Alpine head unit as the later cars, except the earlier model Defenders were equipped with factory ISO audio connections on the wiring harness. No ISO adaptor harness is needed with these earlier Alpine head units and earlier Land Rover branded CD player because the ISO connections already exist in the dashboard. Any aftermarket head-unit will plug into the factory ISO connections.

Later Tdci/Puma Defenders

Later 'Puma' Defenders made life more difficult by using the large grey audio multi plug connector which requires the 'Puma' ISO adaptor to convert the LR grey 'Puma' connector into ISO. The change of connector from factory ISO to the Puma plug was effectively in line with the engine revision from 2.4Tdci to 2.2Tdci, however, changeover model years traditionally result in a mix of components! If you have a 2011/12 model Defender we always advise you remove the head unit to check the head unit wiring and confirm whether you need an ISO adaptor or not.

Do you already have an ISO adaptor?

If your Land Rover has had its factory installed head unit replaced with an aftermarket head-unit, irrespective of age, then there’s a good chance you will have already have ISO connections on the back of the head unit and won't need to use an adaptor harness.  The only way 100% to tell is to remove the head-unit and check.

Alpine headunits...

A common enquiry we receive is from someone who has bought a secondhand Land Rover Alpine head unit and wants to know how they can wire it into their Defender. The factory fit Alpine head units uses a specific harness to connect between Alpine's own small connector on the back of the head unit and the Land Rover audio connector. There isn't currently any aftermarket adaptor for these units so if the head unit didn't come supplied with its original adaptor harness (they typically don't!), then the only solution is to get hold of the Genuine Land Rover harness. There are two part numbers for the Land Rover harness: LR040845 (head unit without Bluetooth) & LR040846 (head-unit with Bluetooth). The cost of either harness is £70+ so our advice would always be not to bother with secondhand Alpine units, because they're more hassle than they're worth!
