MUD is proud to welcome Dynamat to our product portfolio, the ultimate sound deadening material for your classic Land Rover Defender.
Dynamat has been around since 1989 and since its launch has gone on to become the global leader in automotive noise reduction material and just like the Hoover brand is to carpet cleaning, Dynamat is often used as the generic description for car sound insulation material. However, don’t confuse Dynamat with any old ‘shiny’ stick-on sound insulation material though. Throughout the brand’s history the Dynamat range has expanded and gone through multiple generations of improvements so today’s Dynamat Xtreme is 25% thinner, 50% lighter and 4-5 times higher in damping efficiency than the original Dynamat product was back in 1989.
The Dynamat Xtreme product is the highest efficiency sound deadening material available on the market today. Yes, there are cheaper products on the market, but if you’re looking for the best form of sound insulation backed up by real acoustic science, then look no further than Dynamat Xtreme.
Sheet metal resonates creating noise. The one thing Land Rover Defenders aren’t exactly short of is large expanses of sheet metal, hence the reason why Defenders are so noisy, but more importantly why Dynamat is so effective in reducing internal noise levels in any Defender. Land Rover fitted minimal acoustic insulation to the Defender at the factory so it only requires a small amount of time and investment to make a marked improvement to the driving experience and ownership of your Defender. The sound from that cool sound system you’ve installed in your Defender won’t now be bouncing off the tin box that surrounds you!
Unsure as to what that means for your Defender? Check out the Cymbal test below to see how a single strip of Dynamat can completely change the game.
Dynamat Xtreme works by converting all of that internal noise and panel vibration into silent energy through a process called ‘vibro-acoustic energy conversion’. When Dynamat Xtreme is applied to a surface and subjected to vibration, it is the most efficient material available for converting that vibration motion into silent energy. It does this by deflecting the vibration, instead of trying to stop it by simply adding weight to the panel. In fact, Dynamat, through its patented VectorTM technology, can deliver up to 10 times greater damping (using a 10th of the weight for the same effect) compared to other sound damping materials.
Depending how much Dynamat you use, you can typically expect to reduce internal road noise dramatically by between 3 and 15 dB, equating to a massive 30 to 80% reduction. This makes for a quieter, more relaxed, stress-free environment - where you can actually hold a normal conversation with your passengers and use your Bluetooth connected phone without resorting to shouting at the person on the other end of the phone!
Dynamat Xtreme is a 1.7mm thin layer of super sticky butyl rubber bonded to an aluminium alloy skin. Dynamat has temperature range of - 54 degrees and up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit so can even be used in ‘hot’ underfloor or under bonnet areas. You can even confidently fit it on the underside of your Defender bodywork and it will handle mud, sand and dust without issue.
Don’t confuse Dynamat with cheaper Chinese foil backed sound insulation sheets. Dynamat has been the global market leader in sound deadening materials for decades with 100% of its manufacturing still carried out in the USA. The Dynamat Xtreme material we sell is a matt-black face material so is more discreet and unobtrusive than silver foil backed products.
Dynamat Xtreme is super easy to install and requires no special tools. The butyl rubber and heavy aluminium layers will stretch and contour better than any other product on the market without tearing and will conform easily to all surfaces. The sticky butyl rubber will stay in place without the need for any special surface prep, although we always recommend cleaning any surface first with something like isopropyl alcohol or good old brake cleaner to create as good a key as possible. Another feature of Dynamat Xtreme is it won’t leave any odour or dripping material which is a useful to know especially when in a Defender you’ll typically be covering large areas internally in your vehicle. Simply cut your Dynamat Xtreme sheet to shape, peel off the backing and stick it to the surface. Working with the material is quick and easy. You can cut Dynamat Xtreme with a Stanley knife or even a good pair of scissors so application and coverage is fast. A small roller is useful for applying the material to your surface and wearing gloves is a good idea to prevent cuts from the edges of the aluminium layer.
You can purchase Dynamat Xtreme from MUD in three different forms.
Option One is in the shape of pre-cut Defender kits that arrive shaped to a specific area straight out of the box. The pre-cut kits are sold for a number of specific locations in and around the Defender, e.g, under bonnet, rear floor etc. Peel off the backing and away you go. This is the quickest way to equip your Defender but the downside of pre-cut kits is it’s a more expensive method and you only get enough Dynamat material with each pre-cut kit to cover a single specific location.
Option Two is to use the bulk packs of Dynamat Xtreme. This is a more cost-effective way to purchase Dynamat as you get to decide exactly where you install it and you’ll achieve greater coverage per pound with zero waste as you’re guaranteed to find a home for every single piece of offcut. Each bulk pack will provide a total of 36-square feet (3.34m) of coverage. Bulk Packs contain 9 individual sheets measuring 32x18in (81.28x 45.72mm).
If you have a small area leftover area we also offer the Dynamat Squared Kit that contains 8 smaller sheets of Dynamat Xtreme at 450mm x 450mm (18″ x 18″) to give you a total coverage of 1.68 square metres (18 square foot). The Dynamat Xtreme Squared kits are especially useful for smaller projects.
Option Three If you’re going to go the bulk-pack route the most common question from Defender owners is “How much Dynamat will I need?”
The good news is, we’ve worked with Dynamat to create Defender specific bundles that combine Dynamat Xtreme and Dynaliner and contain sufficient material to equip a Defender 90 or 110. Dynaliner compliments Dynamat and is a durable crush and tear resistant material with the highest heat blocking properties available in a single layer synthetic foam-type material. Dynaliner assists in heat control as well as insulation and is designed to provide an ultra-lightweight foam insulator layer to use on top of Dynamat Xtreme. Lay down your Dynamat Xtreme first and then place Dynaliner on top to create a ‘sandwich’. You would typically use Dynaliner on top of Dynamat Xtreme in the roof, wheelarches and the back of the door trims.
We also include a roll of Dynatape in every bundle. This is a 1.5” roll wide roll of Dynamat Xtreme that measures 30 ft long. Dynatape is useful for getting into those tricky to reach areas or finishing off any narrow areas you have leftover.
We offer 3 different Classic Land Rover Defender Bundle Kits;
Defender Kit 1- Front Cabin Kit
This has enough material to cover front cabin area of a 90, 110 & 130
• Door Skins (inner and outer) = Dynamat Xtreme
• Reverse of Door Cards = Dynaliner
• Front Footwells/ parts of the Bulkhead/Firewall that are exposed = Dynamat Xtreme
• Roof (front seats forward) = Dynamat Xtreme + Dynaliner (small squares is sufficient)
• Under Front Seats, ‘seat boxes’
Defender Kit 2-Front & Rear 90
This has enough material to cover the front cabin and rear loadspace area of a 90. The kit combines the Front Cabin Kit with enough additional material to cover the following areas in the back of a 90.
• Floor Area, Roof, Rear Wheelarches - Dynamat Extreme + Dynaliner

Defender Kit 3- Front and Rear 110
This has enough material to cover front cabin area and rear loadspace area of a 110. The kit combines the Front Cabin Kit with enough additional material to cover the following areas in the back of a 110
• Floor Area, Roof, Rear Wheelarches - Dynamat Extreme + Dynaliner

One important thing to remember. There’s really no need to go that crazy. You can apply Dynamat in patches. In the back of any new panel van you’ll typically see very small patches of sound insulating material dotted around the bare panels to prevent the panels from resonating. Just 25-50% area coverage with Dynamat Xtreme will keep a specific panel from resonating but there’s nothing to stop you applying it over an entire area (such as the floor, roof, doors, or seatbox) to create a sound barrier and vibrational damper. Of course, the more you apply the greater the benefit.
Note: Dynamat Xtreme will add a 1.7mm thickness to any surface so be aware of any narrow fixing tolerances.
