Door mounted speakers

The North American Specification (NAS) Defender Station Wagon was the first and only Defender to be fitted with door mounted speakers within traditional one-piece Defender doors.

Used on select special editions

In order to provide the clearance for the door mounted speakers in the NAS models, Land Rover created a specific speaker mounting plinth that sits on the standard Defender door trim. These speaker plinths are the exact same Genuine Land Rover parts used in the NAS Defender. They were also used in the 1998 50th Anniversary Defenders.

Upgrade to 6.5" speakers

A larger 6.5in speaker will provide a better sound compared with the regular Defender dash mounted 4in speakers. Adding a larger door mounted speaker opens up the world of component (tweeter & woofer) speaker kit options for keen audiophiles looking for an even greater audio improvement in the front of their Defender. 6.5in speakers can fit onto the NAS Defender door speaker plinths, while tweeters can be fitted into the top of the Defender dashboard. For example the Kicker KS 6.5" (160 mm) 3-Way Component Speaker System KA51KSS365.

3 fixing points

Note that the Genuine NAS/50th Defender doors speaker plinths were designed around a specific Clarion speaker that unusually used 3 fixings rather than the regular 4 fixings found on most speakers. As a consequence, the Genuine Land Rover NAS Defender door speaker plinths have just 3 fixing holes in them that correspond with the 3 fixings in the factory fit Clarion speaker.

Adaptable if required

Most aftermarket speakers have multiple fixing hole options in them that will align with the 3x fixing holes in the plinths but you may have to drill new fixing holes into the speaker plinth in order to fit some speakers. The Genuine Land Rover NAS Defender door speaker plinths are made from a dense/heavyweight rubber material so drilling into them to create new fixing holes is easy.

Retrofitting...

The NAS/50th models used a unique and now obsolete door trim that had a cut-out in it for the back of the speakers to sit into and had provision for the fixings. The 3x speaker fasteners picked up on 3x spire/speed clips attached to the Defender door trim. In order to retro-fit the Genuine Land Rover NAS door speaker plinths to a regular Defender door trim you will have to cut a hole out of your door trims to create room for the back of the speaker.

Matches door trim profile

The back of the Genuine Land Rover NAS Defender door speaker plinths has a pair of raised profiles in the moulding.

These two raised areas are designed to securely locate the plinth within the horizontal groove that runs across the lower portion of the standard Defender door trim.

Kicker speaker upgrade

The original NAS/50th speakers used a 123mm diameter cut-out. Some 6.5in speakers have a larger diameter cone that will not fit within the central hole of the NAS/50th doors speaker plinths. MUD offers a couple of 6.5in KICKER Audio speaker options that drop straight into the Genuine Land Rover NAS/50th door speaker plinths. Both the KICKER CS and KICKER KS (pictured) speakers provide a great off-the-shelf upgrade for any NAS/50th Defender owner looking to replace their tired speakers.
