The base vehicle is a UK spec RHD 2.2Tdci Defender 110 purchased new in May 2013. The vehicle has covered only 6000 miles and has over 2-years Land Rover warranty remaining. Factory fitted options include, heated seats and windscreen, central locking, electric windows, cubby box, cloth seats, mudflaps, body coloured wheelarches, towbar and electrics. The vehicle is also fitted with the Land Rover off-road wheel and tyre package featuring heavy-duty steel wheels and Goodyear MT/R tyres. Spare is unused. The engine and suspension remain unchanged from the factory.
An Alpine head unit (upgraded from the standard Alpine head unit LR fits) is equipped with Bluetooth, telephone hands-free and provides iPhone/iPod/USB connectivity. A Focal Speaker upgrade including dash mounted tweeters and a Clarion sub-woofer offer a massive improvement over the factory fitted sound system.
The roof conversion features a Swiss Pop-Top design built under licence in the UK by Safari-Equip. The all aluminium construction increases the roof height by only 100mm making it suitable for containerised shipping. The roof creates a far sturdier structure than the original Defender roof while adding only 90kgs to the weight of the car. The chequerplate roof section provides a useful ‘big game’ viewing platform panel while roof mounted cargo tracking can be utilised for creating extra roof top storage. The Pop-Top is deployed by releasing over-centre catches. Pressurised gas struts raise and lower the roof with the bare minimum of effort to ensure making or breaking camp is a stress free and speedy process. You’ll be tucked up in bed while the guy with the roof tent is still wrestling with the cover on his roof tent! The Pop Top is fitted with a full-size double mattress within the roof space Concealed underneath the roof headlining is an additional layer of insulation. The waterproof soft sides of the Pop Top feature mesh lined openings to provide ventilation and keep out the bugs whilst the rear panel features a large viewing window.
Three stainless-steel side lockers provide external storage and free-up valuable internal space. A Safari Equip swing-out ‘wing’ awning provides shade/shelter to the side and rear of the vehicle and can be deployed in seconds. Unlike other ‘wing’ style awnings the awning is completely freestanding and does away for the need for poles and guy lines. Externally the awning is illuminated by LED lighting while a 1000 lumen LED Scenelite to the rear door provides night-time illumination around camp.
Internally the vehicle has been trimmed with full length insulated trim panels fitted with a range of storage nets and high quality internal LED lighting. Plug-in 12v power on the move is provided by marine grade power outlets wired into a Blue Sea Marine grade fusebox. A MUD bulkhead removal bar and MUD seat rails free up extra space for driver and passenger whilst allowing easier access to the rear of the vehicle from the cabin. A MUD cubby box bin, glovebox conversion and a concealed secure stainless steel footwell locker create more storage within the cabin.
The standard Defender lighting has been improved with the fitting of LED’s all round including military specification LED headlamps with polycarbonate lenses.
The beauty of a Pop-Top is that it offers you the convenience of a ready-to-go camper that you can still use every day of the week and it will still fit into a container for when you head off on that big trip. Sleeping within the vehicle provides you with an extra level of security and comfort not found with roof-tents and while you’re on the road, the stealthy low-key appearance won’t attract the wrong kind of attention.
